What is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that results in feelings of sadness, hopelessness, despair, loss of interest and low motivation. It can seriously affect a person’s ability to lead a normal life, at work, socially or within their families. It has been described as the ‘common cold’ of psychiatry because of its frequency of diagnosis. It is a serious condition and can lead to suicidal thoughts and attempts.

Like all human anguish, depression results from a combination of biological, psychological and social factors and effective treatment will address each of these intersecting aspects of a person’s life.
